DRVG; Rhino Invasion
Recap of the DRVG gravel race day, expertly organized by Derek, who we extend our gratitude to for fearlessly spearheading the rhino invasion.
Recap of the Saturday July 22nd, 2023 DRVG Gravel Race, written by Derek
Ok, time to type things. No podium for me in this event. I'm really more of a mid-pack guy most of the time and there were lots of strong individuals and teams at DRVG, I knew looking at who was pre-registered that the front end of this race would be very fast. Add to that a little bike wrecking incident the Sunday before the race and my intentions were really just to go have fun. It's cool to see more gravel races on this side of the state so I wanted to help support the event. According to their website, DRVG will next year be a part of the Michigan Gravel Race Series, so this event should be returning and growing. That will be good to see since they have a really cool course. Take the most fun climbs that Pauly has led us over and start connecting them together into a 50 mile course. There is a shorter 25 mile course available also if 50 is too long.
Starting from Upland Hills Farm, the course quickly climbs up Barr rd and Drahner rd to the highest point in Oakland County. Unfortunately, I had let my warmup run long so had started near the back of the pack and was chasing through this, working my way up to faster groups. I found a good bunch of riders that I would hang with for the next 40 miles until I was hit with some cramps and ended up dropping off. From there I was solo to the finish, unfortunately dropping a few places along the way, but still managed 4th of 9 in my age category (which luckily doesn't include the race winner who is also in my age category!) Afterwards, my Wife, Son and I looked around the farm for a bit, enjoyed some free ice cream from race sponsors and then returned home still with plenty of time left in the afternoon. Did I say how I like local races? Definitely a fun day.
